A Property Investment ReviewIt appears certain that there’ll be a larger than normal choice of paper additions covering this year’s major elections, bailouts, budgets, bankruptcies, protests, weather interruptions and goodness knows what else.

Before we do though, I want to give my own opinion about the changes I have seen in the property investment markets this year, and a preview of the kinds of products we’re going to be promoting from Jan onwards.

Pretty much each property market has had a turbulent and record breaking year in some form or shape over the past twelve months, and a selection of books ( authoritative and otherwise ) will doubtless be put out about them in the new year. The following nations are the ones I have been paying most attention.

Ireland is one of the worst influenced. Often that can end up in superb opportunities, but unfortunately, I have absolutely no intention of investing any money in Irish property in 2010. Costs have fallen, but nowhere near enough, and the oversupply of extremely average quality flats across the country is reasonably stunning. Yields are low, financing is hard to get and the prospects is highly doubtful. Spain is no better sadly and its banks and developers appear hell bent on using their energy and resources to persuade us the market is levelling out and that costs are stabilising. The reality is the opposite and the reluctance of these vested interests to take some troublesome medication is causing the whole economy into a slow and distressing decline.

The UK is home to a more varied and engaging property market than either of the above. I see real worth in well built town centre residences in places such as Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds. In London, unarguably one of the world’s great towns, a big range of commercial and home assets modified hands in the year. The recently incorporated Torcana UK Limited plans to source and broker a good range of investments for our clients.

Emerging Markets have suffered more than most this year. Many of those states will successfully reinvent themselves as green investment hearts and producing consultants, but I fear the times of Major Irish & UK property investment are gone for no less than 5-7 years.
